The Klingon language – characteristics and spread

A variety of ethnic groups and languages existed on the planet Qo'noS until the founding of the Empire by the mythical founder Kahless, and tlhIngan Hol developed from the need for a common language in the wake of this unification process.

Standard Klingon is used in public life and dealing with authorities. The dialect of the emperor (ta’) known as ta’ tlhIngan Hol or ta’ Hol for short (literally, “Emperor’s Klingon”) is taken as the model dialect. Frequent changes in power are a characteristic of Klingon culture, so the emperor’s dialect also changes often. For comparative linguistic purposes, the dialect spoken in the capital of Qo'noS is used as standard.
