Gujarati – characteristics and spread

Gujarati belongs to the Indo-Aryan branch of the Indo-Iranian subgroup of the Indo-European language family.

Gujarati has at least forty-five million native speakers mainly living in the Indian state of Gujarat, with the rest in Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom, USA, Pakistan, Tanzania, and other countries. Gujarati is one of twenty-three officially recognised languages of India.

Gujarati is not usually written in Devanagari alphabet, but has its own that is related to Devanagari.
