The Tagalog language – characteristics and spread

Tagalog is the most widely spoken language in the Philippines and the original language of Tagalog people in and around Manila, the political and economic centre of the Philippines.

An Austronesian language, Tagalog is directly related to Indonesian and Malay, Fijian, Maori, Hawaiian, Malagasy, Samoan, Tahitian, Chamorro, Tetum, and the Austronesian languages of Taiwan.

Languages that have contributed to Tagalog include Spanish, Min Nan (Hokkien Chinese), English, Malay, Sanskrit (via Malay), Arabic (via Malay), and northern Philippine languages such as Kapampangan as spoken on the island of Luzon.
