The Spanish language – characteristics and spread

Spanish is a Romance language in the Indo-European language family, and is currently spoken by about 360 million native speakers – 20 million more than English.

Most Spanish speakers live in South and Central America. Brazil (Portunhol), Belize, Morocco, Western Sahara, the Dutch Antilles and the Philippines, Trinidad and Tobago and Puerto Rico also have large Spanish-speaking populations, and those that speak Spanish as a second language push the number up to about 420 million. Spanish is the fourth most widely spoken language in the world after Mandarin Chinese, Hindi, and English.

Spanish is an official language in the European Union, Organisation of American States and United Nations. Spanish is also an official language alongside English in the British colony of Gibraltar.
