The Sinhala language – characteristics and spread

Sinhala is the language of the Sinhalese, the largest ethnic group in Sri Lanka, and is classified as an Indo-Aryan language in the Indo-Iranian subgroup of the Indo-European languages.

Sinhala is spoken by about sixteen million people that mainly live in Sri Lanka, where it has also been the first official language since 1958. Sinhala has its own alphabet.

The language most closely related to Sinhala is Dhivehi, which is spoken in the Maldives.
