The Flemish language – characteristics and spread

Flemish is a collective term for dialects or groups of dialects of the Dutch language mainly spoken in Belgium, especially in Flanders and Brussels.

Flemish does not exist as a separate language, but purely as a geopolitical term for several dialects, some quite disparate, within a larger region of the Dutch-speaking region of Belgium as opposed to Dutch in the Netherlands.

Standard Dutch is used as the official language of Flanders and the Netherlands.
