The English language – characteristics and spread

English is a Germanic language that belongs to the western branch of the Germanic languages, as do modern German and Dutch.

English is currently the most widespread language in the world, although Mandarin Chinese has the most native speakers. English is taught as a first foreign language at school in many countries, and is the language of business for most international organisations. English is spoken by about 340 million people as a native language plus around 170 million speakers proficient in English as a second language.

English is also one of the twenty-three official languages of the European Union, African Union and Organisation of American States, and is one of the six official languages of the United Nations (UN).
