The Bengali language – characteristics and spread

Bengali belongs to the Indo-Iranian subgroup of the Indo-European languages, and has at least 215 native speakers, more than 140 million of whom live in Bangladesh where Bengali is the official language.

In addition, Bengali has about 75 million speakers in India, where it is one of twenty-three officially recognised languages and the official language of West Bengal and Tripura states, and the second most widely spoken native language after Hindi. Other Bengali speakers can be found in Malawi, Nepal, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom, and United States.
