The Arabic language – characteristics and spread

Arabic is the most widely spoken Semitic language in the Afro-Asiatic language family, and is one of the six official languages in the UN. The language of Islam, Arabic is considered a world language.

Arabic has an estimated 240 million native speakers with a further fifty million speaking Arabic as a second language.

Modern standard Arabic is based on classical Arabic, the language of the Koran, and is very different from its spoken dialects. Individual Arabic dialects in various countries can vary widely, and are not or not easily mutually intelligible if geographically distant, such as in Morocco and Iraq.
